Book Review: Never Flinch

Author: Stephen King

Published: 2025

Rating: 4/5

Holly Gibney is back in yet another taut and timely thriller by Stephen King, Never Flinch. More crime novel than horror, the book interweaves two chilling storylines: a serial killer in Buckeye City targeting innocents based on a skewed sense of justice, and a radical anti-abortion stalker terrorizing a women’s rights activist on her book tour.

King delivers his signature page-turning drive and the narrative reads like a blockbuster thriller, with vivid scenes and tight pacing drawing readers into both deadly cases. Fans of the shy Holly Gibney will be surprised to watch her grow into a new role as a body guard in addition to that of private detective.

However, while good, the novel is not one of King’s best. Some of the new characters we meet feel at times trite, and some of the many sub-plot lines drag on a little too long in the middle, slowing the pace of the crime thriller dramatically compared to say a Patterson or Child novel for those that like their summer reads to move at a faster pace.

In sum, Never Flinch stands as a potent, socially aware thriller propelled by Holly’s resilience and narrative urgency. It may not reach the heights of Holly or The Outsider, but it remains a compelling ride. It is tense, grounded in real-world fears, and anchored by one of King’s most compelling characters. Never Flinch is a must‑read for fans of King’s crime‑thrillers and character‑driven suspense.
